Two Monitors on Docking Station

This dock has been fantastic for me. It’s lightweight and easily portable. I have two monitors hooked up to it, one is a 4k screen and the other a p and both work great. This dock actually works better than my unstable Dell TB16 dock. Make sure when you first plug it in to let it sit plugged into your computer for 5 minutes or so because Windows has to go out and look for drivers to install for the different ports. I thought I had a defective unit at first because I couldn’t get the Ethernet port to work right away but then after waiting for a little bit it started working and I realized Windows had to install the drivers first.

Technical Details

Yes, it is possible you can connect 2 or 2 billion external monitors, all you need is the extension cable, which is normally called a spilter or usb to vga spilter, and you can connect as amany as you want. There’s also a strong indication that those two monitors need to be the same size, since your visual receptors seem to get confused by screens of different sizes. Since many people I know have switched to using a laptop as their primary machine no matter where they are, the trick of using two monitors at least when docked can be crucial.

The trick I use for connecting 2 external monitors to my own laptop is to connect one to the external video port on my laptop and a second monitor gets connected to a DisplayLink adapter. The adapter connects via USB allowing you to extend your desktop to another screen. They are sold under a variety of brand names which makes the adapters a little tricky to track down, but a quick search of eBay for USB to DVI Adapter turns up several options that are basically the same thing under several different names.

If three monitors are connected to the docking station, then the docking station will only support a maximum of two external monitors. Refer to the User Guide of the Dell Dock WD15 for information on how to select and activate the desired monitors.

The 2ndmonitor is set up as extended, not the primary. It should never have icons moved over to it. Here is my setup: Primary, icons set up how I wish them to be. External Monitor connected to docking station: No icons should be on here, I just move windows over to it. Of course, the icon positioning is now messed up too. When I undock, my icons are all over the place.

Other times, the icons and screens are fine until I undock. As soon as I remove from the docking station, the icons kind of “expand”. I have attached pics to show this. They just move down a little bit, and often times they will move down enough to where I cannot read the labels of the icons because they are hidden below the task bar.

To show this, I have attached a screenshot before dock, with 2 monitors laptop on right and after dock with just the laptop monitor. You will see the icons shift after being undocked – they are lower to the bottom and further to the right.
